Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
