A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
